Influenced by outsider art, surrealism and the Chicago Imagists (an eclectic, 1960s-era group of artists who drew creative inspiration from comics, architecture, trash and other aspects of their physical surroundings), Pawlowicz combines elements of magic realism and science fiction in paintings distinguished by bold color fields and unexpected approaches to perspective and scale.

For San Antonio artist Jose Fidel Sotelo, art is an important means of self-exploration and a tool for cultural excavation, for pursuing balance and peace, and for appreciating the beauty in the everyday. Heavily influenced by his studies in design and photography, Sotelo started painting in 2009 with an eye for sharp, crisp images/lines and a penchant for burying complexity within simplicity.

A little more than a year ago, the freelance graphic designer started creating digital collages and posting them on Instagram under the nom de social media Acidwinzip. The works caught the eye of Stephanie Torres of Provenance Gallery. Fast-forward to this month: “File>Save for Web,” an exhibit of 13 pieces by Zavala that combine images plucked from art history, religious iconography, digital icons, ’80s-style graphic elements and “lots of neon,” is on display in the intimate Southtown space...

Run by artist/art historian Stephanie Torres, Provenance Gallery really knocked it out of the park in 2016, with exhibition after exhibition that showcased some truly exciting artists from San Antonio and beyond. The gallery’s first show of the year, a solo exhibit of striking digital works from artist ACIDWINZIP, seems to indicate a 2017 that will be just as good or better.

Continuing its streak of presenting winning exhibits from emerging and established artists alike, Provenance Gallery hosts the opening of “Crux,” a new body of work from San Antonio painter Kat Shevchenko.

Kat Shevchenko has studied painting at UTSA and spent time in Austria studying the Old Master’s technique of painting with oils over egg tempura under paintings. Her work is channeled through the lens of surrealist automatism. She builds a rich, personal mythology employing symbolism drawn from many sources of which the renaissance is one. 

Another month, another winning choice of featured artist by Provenance Gallery. Visual artist, San Anto transplant, recent UTSA BFA grad and self-described military brat Allison Valdivia often finds herself “looking
to the past, looking to [her] family and culture to find a sense of who [she is].” Her new exhibit, coyly (maybe subversively?) titled “Family Happiness,” takes on her own family’s past as a source of hidden stories, forgotten or unshared memories and, ultimately, as a therapeutic journey to reconnect to her own roots...

Lisette Chavez’s Three Hail Marys, Two Our Fathers opened on San Antonio’s Second Saturday, July 9that Provenance Gallery located at 1906 South Flores St. Provenance Gallery is located within a much larger complex. It’s a warehouse of sorts, situated around a railroad crossing, full of other gallery spaces and artists’ studios opened to the public. I drove up solely for the exhibition. The trip, I’m excited to say, was well worth my time and energy, the drive from Corpus Christi being about two or more hours in length. I was rewarded with rhinestones, glamour, glimmer, guilt, and many likenesses of some people’s lord and savior, the one and only, Jesus Christ...

After hosting Lisette Chavez’s stunning “Three Hail Marys, Two Our Fathers” show in July, Provenance Gallery will feature abstract painter Andrea Reyes’ new show “Momento” for the month of August. 

“Three Hail Marys, Two Our Fathers,” the title of Chavez’s show at Provenance Gallery, is the penance she received for her transgressions. The exhibition in the cozy gallery in the complex at 1906 S. Flores St. is an installation of religious icons and objects embellished with glitter, rhinestones and other craft-store frills. Small, intricate drawings of watchful eyes and other images are interspersed throughout. It also includes text in which the artist reveals her trespasses.

Picking up in the sacred/profane space occupied by her MFA thesis exhibition at the University of Arizona Museum of Art, artist and printmaker Lisette Chavez’s latest plumbs the depths of the religious psyche at precisely the spot where universal sanctity meets personal neurosis.

Run by Stephanie Torres, Provenance Gallery opens Oct. 10 in the arts complex at 1906 S. Flores.  The inaugural show will feature work by Carol Cunningham, Sarah Fox and Sarah Janece Garcia.
